American Marble Auctions is our new effort to establish high quality and highly desirable marbles to our fellow marble collectors. Our goal is to set new standards and raise the bar in the marble internet auction business. With this goal in mind, we are endeavoring to follow in the footsteps of successful and high quality marble auction houses of the past. Auction houses such as Running Rabbit and Marblealan on Ebay, these are the goals that we ascertain to achieve. There are certainly some very good dealers active at the moment such as Morphy Auctions and many quality dealers are filling in the voids Marblealan left behind on Ebay. American Marble Auctions is not in the business to compete with these dealers but to complement them. Competition is a good thing, it allows people to have a choice of the things they so passionately enjoy collecting. As collectors ourselves, we know the importance of giving an accurate description, and a thorough understanding of what we bid on. And we also stand by our presentation with a money back guarantee that what we present is exactly what you are buying.
Selling marbles through internet auctions is a complicated business. Presenting these historic and beautiful collectibles pose many challenges to bring accurately to the auction block. In order to insure our customers a safe and secure place to buy quality marbles, we will make sure to present the marbles as well as humanly possible. That means will be combining the latest technology in graphics and bidding software in order to present the best pictures, descriptions and as conservative grading as possible. And we will do it in a way which provides complete satisfaction to our customers and consignors. We recommend that collectors use our state of the art tools carefully and contact us with any questions they may have. We will be available full time through emails and phones, fax and in person to help bidders make smart and sound decisions when dealing with American Marble Auctions. If possible a visit to our new state of the art showroom can also help make your purchase that much more enjoyable.
General Grading Notes: American Marble Auctions grading goes by a numbering system, which coincides with the condition of a marble. When you read a description, we will talk about the condition of the marble in detail and assign a grade number to it. For instance, it might say, “this marble has some minor pocket wear and grades a 9.1”. This number reflects the things we talk about and any flaws or distractions from a marble being perfect. American Marble Auctions proudly can say that we only deal with marbles that are above 8.5 near mint grade. We would consider selling a marble below 8.5 grade if the marble is extremely rare and desirable, but will not consider selling any marble below 8.0 grade. Our group of experts will examine every marble under 10-45X magnification and in bright indoor and outdoor light.
Grade versus Value: A marble’s value depends on many factors including rarity, condition (grading), size, eye appeal etc. All these factors will add to the value of the marble. Condition of the marble, which is numbered with a grade, is one of the most important factors of the final valuation. Having said that, how is a grade affects the value? A tiny microscopic nick takes the marble from mint grade down to near mint grade. Since marbles are very small objects compared to many other glass collectibles, a microscopic damage makes a big difference. So, mint graded (9.0 to 9.5) marbles will have a higher value compared to near mint marbles (8.0 to 8.9). An important note to the bidders is that high premium grade (9.6 to 9.9) marbles will always have higher value. Our estimate values will be based on this philosophy.
8.0-8.4 Near mint minus
Heavy pocketware and damage. Overall visible nicks and/or loss of surface shine.
8.5-8.9 Near mint
Marble has damage and glass loss. Damage is not as made. Surface should still be glossy wet on higher grades. Minor pocket ware may be present.
9.0-9.4 Mint Minus
Marble has no glass loss, but may have minor as made imperfections. As made glass voids, surface creases or air pops on surface may be present. Marble should have original wet surface. Marble may be as made out of round.
Marble has original glossy wet as made surface. As made imperfections do not present any glass loss, air pops or any major creases. Marble should be round.
MARBLE SIZE MEASURING
We place great importance on measuring the marble with complete accuracy. We use digital calibers to measure down to 0.0001”. When we give a dimension it is always the widest point of the marble. If the marble is out of round, we note this in the description and mark it in grading of the marble. When measuring a marble, we place the marble in the caliber and rotate the marble until the caliber does not go up. That is the widest point of the marble.
We can ship your marbles any method you’d like. We prefer Federal Express but a simple $5 first glass shipment via USPS is also available. For more valuable marbles, we insist that a signature is required and we also will recommend insurance. We provide insurance on every lot that goes out no matter the value, under $100 is shipped at no charge with insurance. There is a minimal charge for items over $100 but we only charge you for our costs for shipping (we can’t say that for some other auction houses). Insurance costs to the customer will be very minimal and worth every dime.
$5 First class mail small box with delivery confirmation. This type of shipping is our standard shipping preference. It has been working perfectly for us over the years of experience selling on Ebay for small lots up to 1.75” marbles. Other shipping options are available if the winning bidder requests such shipping or the total size of the lots go over a certain amount.
$7 Priority mail standard small size box. This shipping option is for heavy lots that goes over 1 ounce and still small enough to fit in this type of box, or per customer request.
$10 Priority mail standard medium size box. This shipping option is for heavy and large lots that do not fit in priority mail standard small box.
Insurance is available and we recommend getting both insurance and we do require a signature.
Our shipping is not limited to the USPS. We can ship via Federal Express with tracking on your end. That way you will be assured that your marble is in transit and you’ll be able to track it all the way to your door. Selling marbles is hard enough and losing a package can ruin everyone’s day. Our private insurance company, Sotheby’s, is a company we’ve worked with for many years and instead of trying to collect from the USPS or Fed Ex, you can be assured that if something is lost or stolen, they take care of it usually within two weeks. Our policy covers any loss up to $400,000.
